Dakar's sights are spread around the peninsula — the old colonial centre around Place de l'Indépendance, the Grande Mosquée on the Medina side, the African Renaissance Monument looming above Ouakam, and the soul of it all, Île de Gorée, half an hour away by ferry. The vast new Museum of Black Civilisations and the older IFAN Museum on Place Soweto cover the African art and history side. For a sunset walk, head to the Mosque of the Divinity on the rocks at Ouakam, or watch the pirogues unload the catch at Soumbédioune on the Corniche.
