Dakar's nightlife is famous across West Africa. Mbalax — the polyrhythmic Wolof pop sound popularised globally by Youssou N'Dour — drives most of the live music scene, with clubs and bars filling up properly after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The Almadies neighbourhood at the western tip of the peninsula concentrates the high-end clubs, while the Plateau and Médina have older bars and live-music venues with rougher edges. By day, French-style cafes line the Plateau and there is a small but growing scene of third-wave coffee shops in the upmarket districts.
