Massalikoul Djinane Mosque

Vast new Mouride mosque on the Corniche, opened in 2019

Massalikoul Djinane — "the paths of paradise" — is the largest mosque in West Africa, opened in September 2019 after years of construction funded largely by the Mouride brotherhood, the powerful Senegalese Sufi order based in Touba. It stands on the Corniche Ouest, an enormous white-marble compound with five domed minarets, the tallest 78 metres.

The mosque holds up to 30,000 worshippers and the surrounding plaza another several thousand. Architecturally it is Moroccan-influenced, immaculately finished, and intensely white. Non-Muslims are usually welcomed onto the courtyard and sometimes into the prayer hall outside service times; dress modestly, remove shoes, and check at the gatehouse. The exterior alone — particularly lit at night — is worth the detour.
