Mosque of the Divinity

Modernist white mosque on the rocks at Ouakam, with ocean views from the prayer hall

The Mosquée de la Divinité sits in a low cove on the Atlantic coast at Ouakam, built directly above the rocks. Completed in 1997 by the brotherhood of the Layène, a Sufi order founded in 19th-century Yoff, the building combines a domed prayer hall with sweeping curved walls in brilliant white, set against the dark basalt cliffs and the green-blue Atlantic.

The mosque is best photographed from the cliffs above or from the small surfing beach immediately below, where local kids practise in the breaks. Non-Muslims are welcomed onto the surrounding terrace; entry to the prayer hall depends on the time and the welcome of whoever is there. The setting alone — open ocean, basalt, white domes — makes the trip across the city worthwhile.
