Pointe des Almadies

The westernmost point of mainland Africa, a rocky headland with surf breaks

The Pointe des Almadies is, by a few hundred metres, the westernmost point of mainland Africa — a low rocky promontory at the tip of the Cap-Vert peninsula. There is no dramatic monument; just a small concrete marker on a windswept rock, a couple of fishing boats pulled up nearby, and Atlantic surf working a long reef break offshore.

The neighbourhood around it, also called Les Almadies, is one of the more upmarket residential areas of Dakar — expat villas, embassies, the country's better resort hotels and a handful of surfboards-on-the-roof beach cafes. The reefs offshore are popular with serious surfers; lessons and rentals are easy to find on the main beach south of the point.
