Nid d'Aigle

La Digue's summit with panoramic views and rare flycatchers

La Digue's high point at 333 metres rewards the climb with views across the island and out to Praslin, Mahe, and the smaller islands scattered between them. The path up through the forest is rough in places — sturdy footwear and water are essential — but it takes only about 45 minutes from the road.

The forest around Nid d'Aigle is one of the best places on the island to spot the Seychelles black paradise flycatcher, a striking bird with an iridescent black body and long trailing tail feathers. The male is unmistakable; the female is chestnut-coloured. There are thought to be a few hundred left, mostly on La Digue.

A story
The name means Eagle's Nest, though the eagle in question — the Madagascar fish eagle — is a rare visitor. The Seychelles black paradise flycatcher is far more likely to be spotted in the forest below the summit.
