Sea Point

Densely populated seaside suburb of art deco blocks and the city's best promenade walk

Sea Point is a densely built residential suburb along the Atlantic coast, a string of mid-century and art deco apartment blocks facing the cold ocean and backed by Signal Hill and Lion's Head. It is one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Cape Town and one of its most cosmopolitan, with a large Jewish community, recent African immigrants, long-established Capetonian families and a growing population of young professionals.

The main draw is the Sea Point Promenade — a wide, paved seafront walkway that runs for several kilometres from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay, flat and sheltered and busy at all hours with joggers, families, dog-walkers and fishermen. The outdoor tidal pool at Sea Point Pavilion is one of the best in the city: salt water, cleaned daily, with lanes for swimming and a shallow pool for children. The water is cold all year.

Main Road and the streets behind it have a good density of restaurants, delis, cafés and bakeries, with a higher concentration of kosher and Middle Eastern options than anywhere else in the city. The beachfront strip itself is more touristy, but walk a block inland and Sea Point still feels like a real neighbourhood rather than a tourist district.
