Labia Theatre

Independent art-house cinema in a converted ballroom, running classic and foreign-language films since 1949

The Labia is Cape Town's oldest independent cinema, opened in 1949 in a converted ballroom on Orange Street, and one of the very few art-house cinemas left in the country. Four small screens run a mix of foreign-language films, documentaries, repertory classics and the more thoughtful end of new releases.

Tickets are cheap, the seats are old, and the popcorn comes in paper bags from a small kiosk by the entrance. The cinema is run as a not-for-profit and has weathered the streaming age better than most. A good evening out if you want to take the city's cultural temperature.
