Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

World-class botanical garden on Table Mountain's eastern slopes

Kirstenbosch is one of the great botanical gardens of the world, set against the eastern flanks of Table Mountain with vast lawns, indigenous fynbos, ancient cycads, and meticulously labelled plantings of South Africa's extraordinary endemic flora. In spring (September–October) the gardens are at their best, with the Cape's wildflower season at full throttle.

The Tree Canopy Walkway gives a memorable view across the garden and out to the city, and Sunday summer concerts on the central lawn are a Cape Town institution. Plan at least half a day. The garden is also one of the main starting points for hikes up the back of Table Mountain — Skeleton Gorge and Smuts Track both begin from the upper paths.

A story
Kirstenbosch was founded in 1913 on land bequeathed by Cecil Rhodes, and was the first botanical garden in the world dedicated to a country's indigenous flora — in this case the Cape Floristic Region, one of only six floral kingdoms in the world. The centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, opened in 2014, snakes 130 metres through the upper canopy at heights of up to 12 metres.
