Koopmans-de Wet House

18th-century townhouse furnished as a wealthy Cape family home

The Koopmans-de Wet House on Strand Street is a meticulously preserved late-eighteenth-century townhouse, the family home of Marie Koopmans-De Wet — a turn-of-the-century Cape philanthropist and protector of historic buildings. She bequeathed it to the city in 1906 with the request that it be kept as a museum of Cape decorative arts.

The interior is one of the most evocative period rooms in Cape Town, with original furniture, Chinese porcelain, glassware and textiles displayed exactly as Koopmans-De Wet left them. It is small — allow forty-five minutes — but in many ways more atmospheric than the bigger Iziko museums. Closed on Sundays.
