Grey Street (Yusuf Dadoo Street)

Spine of Durban's old Indian quarter, lined with shops, spices and curries

Officially renamed Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street but still universally called Grey Street, this is the spine of Durban's old Indian quarter and one of the most distinctive streetscapes in the country. Indian traders settled here from the 1870s onwards, and the street is still lined with sari shops, spice merchants, jewellery stores, halal butchers and curry houses serving bunny chow from steel counters.

Walk it during the day, when the action peaks. Combine it with the Juma Masjid and the Victoria Street Market — all are within a couple of blocks. Like much of central Durban, the area is not safe to wander alone after dark.
