Durban is subtropical and hot all year. The best months are April to October — the dry season, with sunny days at around 22-26°C and warm sea temperatures. June and July are the coolest, the surf is at its best, and the Sardine Run brings whales, sharks and millions of seabirds along the coast.
Summer (December–March) is hot, sticky and rainy, often with afternoon thunderstorms; humidity can be punishing. December is the South African school-holiday season and the beachfront is at its busiest. The annual Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg runs in June and fills the city; book accommodation well ahead.
