Howard College

Grand 1930s university campus building on the Berea ridge

The original campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, perched on the western slope of the Berea, is dominated by Howard College: a vast 1930s neoclassical building of pale stone with a portico, columns and a long colonnade. It was built with the bequest of T.B. Davis, in memory of his son Howard, killed at the Somme.

The campus is dignified, mature and shaded by jacarandas and frangipanis. The Howard College theatre and the Centre for Visual Arts are open to visitors. Worth a swing through if you are heading up the Berea.
