Inanda Heritage Route

Half-day township route taking in Gandhi's Phoenix Settlement and Inanda Seminary

The Inanda Heritage Route runs through three of the most important sites in 20th-century South African history, all in the township of Inanda 30km north-west of Durban. Phoenix Settlement was the home where Mahatma Gandhi developed his philosophy of satyagraha (non-violent resistance) between 1904 and 1914; the small museum on site is excellent. Ohlange Institute was founded in 1900 by John Dube, the first president of the ANC, and is where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the 1994 election. Inanda Seminary was the first secondary school for African girls in southern Africa.

The route is best done with a guide — both for context and because Inanda is not somewhere to wander alone. Several Durban tour operators run half-day Inanda trips for around R600.
