Juma Masjid

Largest mosque in the southern hemisphere with free guided tours

The largest mosque in the southern hemisphere, on the corner of Grey (Yusuf Dadoo) and Queen Streets. Built in 1881 and expanded in 1943, it can hold roughly 7,000 worshippers and dominates the old Indian quarter with its gilded domes and minarets. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times — dress conservatively, remove shoes — and the mosque runs free guided tours that include a brief introduction to Islam in South Africa.
