The Playhouse is Durban's main performing arts venue, a mock-Tudor confection facing the City Hall across Anton Lembede Street. Built in 1935 as a cinema, it now houses five performance spaces and hosts the resident Playhouse Company — opera, ballet, drama and an annual jazz festival.
The fake-Elizabethan facade, complete with timbered gables, was the cinema-going dream of the 1930s; inside, the Opera Theatre still has the original star-strewn ceiling. Worth a look from outside even if there's no show on. Programme on the website.
