Umhlanga Lighthouse

Red-and-white striped lighthouse on Umhlanga's main beach, postcard subject

The Umhlanga Lighthouse is the red-and-white-banded landmark at the edge of the main beach in Umhlanga, and the most photographed structure on the South African north coast. Built in 1954, it is fully automated and not open to visitors, but the dunes around it and the long promenade walk past it make it a permanent fixture of any Umhlanga visit.

Time a stop for sunset. The lighthouse stands at the centre of the popular beach walk between Lighthouse Beach and Bronze Beach, with several restaurants for a drink after.

A story
The lighthouse is unmanned and entirely automated — its 1700-watt lamp and rotating prism can be seen 24 nautical miles out to sea. The neighbouring Oysters Bar building was built to lodge the lighthouse-keeper before the system went automatic in the 1980s.
