A 14-hectare botanical garden on the southern edge of George, bordering the Outeniqua Nature Reserve. The collection focuses on fynbos and indigenous forest species. Walking trails wind through different habitats; the garden is open daily and entry is cheap. Good for birdwatching — sunbirds, sugarbirds, and a range of forest birds use the garden regularly.
Garden Route Botanical Garden
A story
The botanical garden sits on the edge of the Outeniqua Nature Reserve, which means it backs onto indigenous forest rather than suburbs. The fynbos section is particularly good — the Cape Floristic Region has more plant species per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on Earth, and the garden brings that density into an accessible form. The best time to visit is spring (August to October) when the proteas, ericas, and restios are in bloom; the garden is also a reliable spot for Cape sugarbirds, which follow the proteas.
