St Mark's Cathedral

The Anglican Cathedral of St Mark stands on Cathedral Square in central George, consecrated in 1850. The exterior is Victorian Gothic stone; the interior is cool and simply furnished. The square around the cathedral is a decent place to sit in the shade in a town that has few other pedestrian-friendly public spaces. Entry is free.

A story
St Mark's is the seat of the Anglican Diocese of George, which was carved out of the Diocese of Cape Town in 1911. The cathedral was consecrated in 1850, making it one of the older Anglican churches in South Africa. The interior is modest by European cathedral standards but has a quiet dignity and some good Victorian stained glass. The square in front of the cathedral — Cathedral Square — is one of the few genuinely pleasant public spaces in central George, shaded by mature trees.
