A small sheltered cove 20 kilometres southwest of George with one of the Garden Route's most consistent surf breaks. When the surf is good, experienced surfers have the right-hand point; when it is flat, the enclosed bay is ideal for swimming. Access is down a steep road from the N2; parking is limited in the small lot at the bottom. No facilities beyond a tidal pool and basic toilets.
Victoria Bay
A story
Victoria Bay is one of the best beach breaks in South Africa and has a devoted following among Cape Town surfers who drive the 400 kilometres specifically for it. The cove is tiny — the beach is no more than 150 metres long — hemmed in by cliffs on both sides, which concentrates the swell into a reliable right-hand point break. When the surf is flat, the cove becomes a perfect family swimming beach with calm, clear water. The few holiday cottages perched above the bay are booked years in advance by their regular occupants.
