The Johannesburg Art Gallery in Joubert Park is one of the most significant art collections in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the most consistently overlooked by visitors. The building — a large neoclassical structure designed by Edwin Lutyens and opened in 1915 — houses Old Masters, 17th-century Dutch paintings, an impressive collection of 19th-century British art, and what is widely considered the best collection of South African art in the country, covering both historical and contemporary work.
Joubert Park, the public garden surrounding the gallery, is rough and you should not linger or walk through it alone. Go straight from your Uber to the gallery entrance. Inside, however, the museum is well maintained and calm. It is much less visited than the history-focused sites like the Apartheid Museum or Constitution Hill, which is a pity — the South African art section alone is worth the trip.
