The Livingstone Tower is a small white-painted stone tower on the road from the centre to the Catholic Mission, marking the spot where David Livingstone's embalmed body was reportedly placed before being carried on to the mission church and ultimately on to Zanzibar and London. Whether this exact spot was the actual place is uncertain — Bagamoyo has accumulated several Livingstone landmarks over the years — but the tower has stood here since the early 20th century.
The detail matters because Livingstone's posthumous journey is one of the great African stories. After his death at Lake Bangweulu in 1873, his two African companions, Chuma and Susi, dried and embalmed the body and carried it overland for nine months to Bagamoyo, then on to Zanzibar and back to Westminster Abbey. The tower is a five-minute walk from the Catholic Mission and is worth a stop for context.
