Nunge is the long stretch of beach that runs north from Bagamoyo town for about ten kilometres — wide white sand backed by coconut palms, with very little development beyond a handful of small hotels and beach houses. It is the most accessible decent beach within easy reach of Dar es Salaam and gets busy with weekending families.
The reef is offshore enough that swimming is straightforward at most tides. Watch out for sea urchins near the rocks at low tide. Most of the beach is public, but the better access is via the gates of the small hotels along the road. The fishermen launch their boats from the south end of Nunge at first light — a quiet spectacle if you happen to be staying nearby.
