Oyster Bay

Leafy diplomatic district along the seafront — bars, embassies, and Coco Beach.

The original Oyster Bay was a fishing village; today it is the diplomatic and old-money district of the city, a green crescent of streets between the embassies on Haile Selassie Road and the seafront at Toure Drive. Most foreign embassies cluster here, as do most of the city's old expat bars and quite a few of the better restaurants.

The neighbourhood is built for cars rather than walking, but Coco Beach makes a natural anchor — you can park along Toure Drive, walk on the sand for half an hour, and then end up at one of the bars for an early drink. The Friday-evening change of mood, when the embassies empty out and the bars fill up, is one of the small pleasures of the area.
