Pugu Hills

Forested ridge 25 km southwest of the city — caves, viewpoints, easy walking.

Pugu Forest Reserve covers a low ridge of coastal hill forest about half an hour southwest of central Dar — close enough for a half-day trip and remote enough to feel like proper countryside. The reserve protects one of the last fragments of original coastal forest in the region, with several hundred bird species, blue monkeys, and a few elusive antelope.

A handful of marked trails climb from the gate to viewpoints over the Kisarawe plains and out to a series of small caves used as ritual sites by the local Zaramo. The privately run Pugu Hills Nature Centre at the entrance arranges guides for a small fee and serves cold drinks and lunch on a thatched terrace. Weekdays are quiet; weekends bring families from Dar.
