White Fathers' House

Coral-stone Arab villa, the oldest two-storey building in the city.

The Atiman House, better known as the White Fathers' House after the Catholic mission that ran it for most of the twentieth century, is the second-oldest building in Dar after the Old Boma. The Sultan of Zanzibar built it in 1866 as a residence for the local agent of his Indian Ocean trading network; the upper-floor verandah, with its turned wooden balustrade and shallow tiled roof, is the most photogenic surviving piece of Zanzibari architecture in the city.

The building is now privately owned and not open to the public, but it can be seen clearly from the corner of Sokoine Drive and Bridge Street. The Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage walking tour stops here and gives a short history of the building's chequered ownership.
