Kariakoo Market

Dar's biggest, loudest market in a WWI-era Carrier Corps site

Kariakoo is the loudest, busiest, most overwhelming market in the city — a vast covered hall surrounded by streets that overflow with vendors of fruit, vegetables, spices, textiles, charcoal, electronics and just about anything else. The name is a Swahili corruption of "Carrier Corps", a reference to the African porters quartered here during the First World War. Go in the morning when the produce is freshest, leave anything valuable behind, and accept that you will be jostled. Pickpockets work the crowds, but the place is the beating heart of Dar.
