Béja's best argument as a stop is its position halfway between two of Tunisia's great Roman sites. Bulla Regia, with its astonishing underground villas, lies 50 km west. Dougga, the spectacular hilltop Roman city often called the best-preserved in North Africa, lies 50 km south. Either can be done as a half-day trip; both together make a full day. A car or a hired taxi for the day is the practical way to manage it — public transport between the sites is patchy and slow.
