Arch of Alexander Severus

The Arch of Alexander Severus is one of two triumphal arches that survive at Dougga, the smaller of the two but also the better preserved. It was built in AD 222 in honour of the emperor whose name it carries — a young ruler murdered by his own troops at the age of 26.

The arch is single-bay, in a relatively plain Severan style, but the dedicatory inscription is still legible on its attic. It sits across the ancient road that ran westward out of the city, framing what was once the view down into the valley.
