The Licinian Baths are the larger of Dougga's two surviving bath complexes — a 3rd-century AD facility donated to the city by the Licinii family. The plan is impressive: a frigidarium with cold-water plunge pools, a tepidarium, a caldarium with under-floor heating, a sequence of dressing rooms, and a colonnaded courtyard.
The most striking feature is the network of service tunnels and hypocaust spaces below the main floor: enslaved workers shuffled coal and stoked the furnaces here, out of sight of the bathers above. You can still climb down into these underground rooms, which are usually cool and a relief on a hot afternoon.
