Day trips

Tataouine (20km south) — the regional capital and the largest town in the area. Has its own ksour, a museum covering the regional heritage, a Saturday market that draws in traders and visitors from across the region, and the full range of services that Ghomrassen lacks. A practical base for the area as well as a destination in its own right.

Chenini (35km southwest of Tataouine) — a dramatic clifftop Berber village with a white mosque perched on the ridge above ruined older structures. One of the most visually striking villages in the south. The road up requires care but is passable in a standard car.

Ksar Ouled Soltane (30km south of Tataouine) — arguably the most spectacular ksar in Tunisia, with four-storey ghorfas arranged around two courtyards in excellent condition. Less visited than Ksar Hadada because it is further from the main road, which works in its favour.

Medenine (50km north) — a larger town and transport hub with the ruins of an old ksar in the centre, now partially incorporated into the surrounding streets. A practical stopping point for fuel, supplies, and onward travel rather than a destination, but the central ksar remnants are worth a look.
