Ghomrassen is one of several towns in the Tataouine region with surviving ksar architecture, and the surrounding landscape contains numerous smaller ksour visible from the road or reachable on foot. The eroded limestone gorges, rocky hillsides, and Berber hilltop settlements give the whole region a distinctive character that sets it apart from the sandy desert further south or the coastal lowlands to the north.
Many of the smaller ksour are in various states of abandonment or partial ruin, which makes for interesting exploration but means there is nothing organised to see — no entry fees, no signs, no facilities. A hire car or 4WD opens up the back roads between settlements and allows you to stop when something catches your eye from the road. The landscape itself, particularly in low morning or evening light, is the main reward.
The regional centre of Tataouine has a museum covering the ksar tradition if you want background context before exploring.
