Cliff Sanctuary

The cliff sanctuary sits on the rocky hillside directly above the town centre, a traditional Berber sacred site tucked into the crags. The climb up from town is short and the views over Ghomrassen and the surrounding gorge landscape are good — the scale of the eroded limestone terrain becomes clear from up here in a way it does not from street level.

Sacred sites in this form — small shrines or sanctuaries set in natural features of the landscape — are common across the Berber-settled parts of North Africa. This one is modest and unremarkable by the standards of larger pilgrimage sites, but the setting is the point. The walk up and back takes under an hour.
