Sousse Archaeological Museum

The Sousse Archaeological Museum, housed in the old Kasbah tower, holds the second-finest collection of Roman mosaics in Tunisia after the Bardo in Tunis. The mosaics come largely from the Roman city of Hadrumetum, which occupied the same coastal location from around the 4th century BCE until the Arab conquest. They cover floors, walls, and entire rooms — scenes from mythology, hunting, marine life, and portraits of daily Roman life in Africa.

Beyond the mosaics, the museum holds Punic funerary objects, sculpture, and a Roman sarcophagus collection. The Kasbah building itself is worth the visit: the tower dates to the 11th century and offers a view over the Medina rooftops and the sea. The combination of Roman artefacts, Islamic architecture, and panoramic views makes this one of the most rewarding stops in Sousse.

A story
The museum's mosaic collection documents a city that was once one of the wealthiest in Roman Africa. Hadrumetum — Sousse's Roman predecessor — sided with Julius Caesar rather than Pompey, a bet that paid off: Caesar rewarded it with special status after winning the civil war, and the city prospered for the next four centuries. The mosaics are the physical record of that prosperity.
