Chapungu Kraal, in the eastern suburbs of Harare, is a recreation of a traditional nineteenth-century Shona village set in landscaped gardens that double as an outdoor sculpture park. Hundreds of Shona stone sculptures are displayed throughout the grounds, from small decorative pieces to monumental works. The quality is high and the setting genuinely attractive.
Weekend afternoons bring traditional drumming and dance performances. The on-site craft market sells stone sculptures, carved wooden objects, and traditional crafts at reasonable prices — better value and more authentic than the tourist markets near the city centre hotels. Allow two to three hours for a proper visit.
