Mbare Musika

Harare's largest and most chaotic market — vegetables, buses, and everything in between

Mbare Musika is the main market for Harare's working population — a vast, teeming place where the city buys its vegetables, fruit, and household goods. It also functions as the main intercity bus terminus, which means the area is perpetually busy with long-distance travellers, market traders, and the general organised chaos of a major African transport hub.

The market is not a tourist attraction in any sanitised sense: it is noisy, crowded, and unrelenting. But it gives you an authentic picture of how Harare works on the ground level. Come in the morning when the fresh produce is at its best, keep a firm grip on your belongings, and be prepared to negotiate. The grilled food stalls around the periphery are cheap and good.
