Cheung Kok is a small farming village a few kilometres south of Kampong Cham that has been developed as a community-tourism project by the Cambodian NGO Amica. Visitors can walk the dirt tracks past wooden stilt houses, sugar-palm groves and rice paddies, watch silk-weavers, palm-sugar makers and basket-weavers at work, and buy directly from the cooperatives that group the village's craftspeople.
The aim is to give traditional rural skills a paying market and a reason to be kept alive. The visit takes between an hour and a half day depending on appetite; there's a small village restaurant for lunch. Tuk-tuk from town for around US$10 return.
