Kizuna Bridge

Cambodia's first permanent bridge over the Mekong

The Kizuna Bridge — kizuna means "bonds" or "friendship" in Japanese — was when it opened in December 2001 the first permanent bridge anywhere across the Mekong in Cambodia, and at 1,360 metres remains one of the longer river crossings in the country. It was built with a $56-million grant from Japan in what was, after the long isolation of the Khmer Rouge years, a hugely symbolic gesture of post-conflict reconstruction.

The bridge appears on the 500-riel banknote, and the approach to it from the Kampong Cham side is an attractive walk along the riverfront promenade. Plenty of viewpoints from the lower bank to photograph the cable-stayed structure, particularly at sunset.
