Wat Krom

Wat Krom (the "Lower Pagoda") sits on a smaller hill closer to the centre of town, accessible by a long stone staircase or a short steep road. The temple is the older of the two — the central shrine is dedicated to Yeay Mao, the legendary mother spirit who watches over fishermen on the Cambodian coast.

Local boat owners come here to make offerings before long voyages. Statues of Yeay Mao, ranging from human-sized to monumental, are scattered across the grounds. The view from the temple terrace is excellent: a sweep across the gulf and the islands.
