Wat Leu

Wat Leu (the "Upper Pagoda") sits on a forested hill 130 metres above the town and is the spiritual centre of Sihanoukville. The walk or short ride up leads through a Buddhist forest monastery with several brightly painted shrine halls, a large reclining Buddha, and resident macaques.

The viewpoint from the top is the best in the city — out over the port, the headland, and on a clear day to Koh Rong on the horizon. Bring a sarong or wear long trousers and a shirt with sleeves; donations to the temple are welcomed.

A story
The "upper pagoda" was built on the highest hill above Sihanoukville so that fishermen returning from the gulf could see it long before they sighted the port — a lighthouse made of paint and gold rather than light.
