Granite Peaks and Formations

The upper reaches of Tianzhu Mountain are defined by granite formations of unusual scale and variety. Forty-five peaks rise above 1,000 meters within the designated geopark area, and the summit zone concentrates the most striking shapes: towers, natural bridges, walls, and balanced rocks that appear in the visual grammar of classical Chinese landscape painting because they are, in fact, the landscapes that those paintings were depicting. The connection between this terrain and the ink-wash mountain aesthetic is literal rather than metaphorical.

The UNESCO Global Geopark designation awarded in 2011 recognized not just the drama of the surface formations but the geological complexity beneath them: a landscape shaped by the collision of ancient tectonic plates, producing structures that tell a detailed story of crustal deformation over hundreds of millions of years. Interpretive panels along the main trails explain the geology with enough specificity to make the formations more interesting rather than less. The rock color shifts with altitude, from pale grey at the base to orange-tinged granite on the highest surfaces, particularly striking in late afternoon light.
