When to Go

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit Tianzhu Mountain. Temperatures are comfortable for hiking, the trails are less crowded than in peak summer, and the light is particularly good for the granite formations. Autumn colour in the lower forest zones is at its best in late October.

Summer brings heavy rainfall to the mountain, with July and August seeing frequent afternoon thunderstorms that can close upper trails. The valley base is hot and humid. Winter above 1,000 meters can see ice and snow; the formations look spectacular under snow but the trails become genuinely hazardous. Spring fog is common and can be beautiful, though it eliminates the summit views.
