Chuxi is one of the most rewarding Fujian tulou clusters because it feels less overwhelmed than the easiest stops. The earthen buildings sit in a mountain valley in Yongding, with large round and rectangular tulou arranged among fields, lanes, and working village life.
The cluster's showpiece is Jiqing Lou, a vast round tulou known for its many staircases and internal divisions. Chuxi takes more effort to reach, but that effort is part of the appeal: you get the scale and ingenuity of tulou architecture with a stronger sense of landscape and community around it.
