Impressions Da Hong Pao

Impressions Da Hong Pao (印象大红袍) is the outdoor theatrical show created by Zhang Yimou, the filmmaker behind the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. The performance uses the actual mountains of Wuyishan as its stage — a semicircle of peaks 360 degrees around the audience serves as backdrop and screen. The show runs at dusk and after dark, with the mountains illuminated in shifting colours. The narrative loosely follows the history and mythology of Da Hong Pao tea, but the visuals are the point.

The production involves a cast of over 200 performers on a stage that extends across the valley floor, with the mountains rising behind them. Audience seating is terraced into the hillside. The show runs nightly (weather permitting) and lasts about 70 minutes. Booking in advance is recommended in the summer high season; tickets are available through the Wuyishan Scenic Area ticket office or major Chinese booking platforms. Bring a layer — the mountain air cools quickly after dark even in summer.

A story
The show uses 36 surrounding mountain peaks as its backdrop — no stage set has ever been built at that scale. Zhang Yimou and his co-directors designed the lighting to use the natural rock faces as screens, projecting colour across surfaces that are up to 300 metres tall. On nights with low cloud, the peaks disappear and reappear through the mist.
