Jinjiangli is one of the Kaiping villages where diaolou watchtowers rise above low rural houses, mixing defensive purpose with the tastes and money of overseas Chinese families. The towers look partly Chinese, partly European, and entirely local to this corner of Guangdong.
It is a strong stop because the architecture still sits in its village setting. Walk slowly, look at the details on the towers, and treat the place as a story of migration as much as a collection of unusual buildings.
