Majianglong Village

Majianglong is the most atmospheric of the four designated villages, the towers emerging from dense bamboo thickets and the paths between them quiet enough that you can hear the wind in the leaves. The relative inaccessibility — it requires either a long walk or a bicycle from the main road — keeps it less visited than Liyuan, which is to its advantage. The towers here are less polished and more evocative for it: weathered, moss-covered, their interiors accessible in some cases through unlocked doors.

The bamboo forest surrounding the village is itself worth the visit, a tall green space that makes the towers appear and disappear as you walk through it. Early morning is best, before the tour groups arrive from Guangzhou.
