Nanling National Forest Park

The Nanling National Forest Park covers the section of the Nanling mountain range that forms Guangdong's northern border, and it contains the most intact forest in the province. Unlike the landscaped scenic areas that dominate Guangdong tourism, this is actual wilderness: primary forest with old-growth trees, genuine hiking trails rather than paved promenades, and wildlife including leopard cats, macaques, and over 300 bird species.

The main hiking route ascends Shikengkong, the province's highest peak, through increasingly dense cloud forest. The trail takes most walkers five to six hours return and is genuinely demanding in places. The summit is often in cloud, but clear days give views across the Nanling ridge and down into the forested valleys of northern Guangdong. The park also has waterfalls and cold pools at lower elevations that are popular with families, and the Yin Keng ranger station area has comfortable accommodation and good trail information.

A story
Shikengkong, at 1,902 metres, is the highest peak in Guangdong, and the forest around it is the only remaining primary forest in the province — every other patch was logged during the twentieth century. The survival of this forest is partly due to its remoteness and partly to its role as a watershed, supplying water to several major rivers downstream.
