Shaoguan Old City

The older parts of Shaoguan, particularly the streets near the confluence of the Zhen and Wu rivers, retain a texture that distinguishes this Hakka-inflected city from coastal Guangdong. The architecture is northern Guangdong vernacular — narrower shophouses, less elaborate ceramic roof ornaments, more use of stone — and the street life moves at a pace that feels genuinely unhurried by comparison with the Pearl River Delta cities.

The covered market near the river junction is good for local produce, including preserved meats and dried mushrooms of the kind used in Hakka cooking, which depends more on pickling and drying than the fresh-ingredient approach of coastal Cantonese cuisine. The old streets are walkable in an hour or two; the main pleasure is the unhurried atmosphere rather than specific sights.
