Lianhuashan Park

Lianhuashan Park is Shenzhen's central green space — a large urban park spread across a low hill in Futian District, overlooking the CBD from the north. The hilltop affords one of the best free views in the city: looking south, you see the Futian Central Business District with the Ping An Finance Centre dominating the skyline, and beyond it the hills of Hong Kong's New Territories.

At the summit stands a large bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping, the architect of China's economic opening and the man responsible for designating Shenzhen as the country's first Special Economic Zone in 1980. The statue is a pilgrimage site for visitors from across China and is especially busy on national holidays.

The park itself is well maintained with walking paths, a lake, and areas where locals practise tai chi and fly kites in the mornings. Entry is free. The Shenzhen Museum and Civic Center are a short walk to the south.

A story
The park's large bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping, unveiled in 2000, shows him striding forward with his jacket open — a pose designed to suggest confidence and forward motion. Every year on his birthday, city officials lay wreaths at the base. The hill below the statue is the highest point in central Shenzhen and was chosen for the park specifically so the statue could be visible across the entire CBD.
