Elephant Trunk Hill

Guilin's most photographed karst peak, shaped exactly like a drinking elephant

Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan) sits at the confluence of the Li River and the Taohua River, its limestone mass shaped almost comically like a giant elephant drinking from the water. It is the most recognisable landmark in Guilin and the image reproduced on everything from tourist brochures to local pottery.

The park around the hill allows you to climb to the top for a view over the city and the river, or to walk through the Water Moon Cave — the arched opening under the "trunk" that frames a circle of river and reflected sky. There are also cave carvings from the Tang and Song dynasties inside. Entry is ticketed. The hill is best seen from the far bank of the Li River, where you can get the classic view without paying admission.

A story
The hill's shape — a rounded karst mass lowering a "trunk" into the Li River — has made it the symbol of Guilin for over a thousand years. Tang dynasty poets wrote about it; it appears in Song dynasty landscape scrolls. The water-filled arch under the trunk, called Water Moon Cave, creates a perfect circle when the reflection is included, representing the moon in both water and sky.
